回避性人格: 回避性人格の人は、他者から拒絶されることに過度に敏感で、人間関係を含めて新しいことを始めるのを怖がります。愛情や受け入れられることに対して強い欲求を抱いているにもかかわらず、失望や批判を恐れて、親密な人間関係や社会的状況を避ける傾向があります。分裂病質人格とは異なり、孤独感や他者とうまくかかわれないことについて率直に悩みます。また、境界性人格と違って、拒絶に対して怒りを向けるのではなく、引きこもり、内気で憶病な様子をみせます。回避性人格は全般的なタイプの社会恐怖に類似しています(不安障害: 社会恐怖を参照)。

セオドア・ミロンの回避性人格障害についての仮説によると、『葛藤のあるタイプ・過敏なタイプ・恐怖感の強いタイプ・自己を見捨てるタイプ』の4つのタイプに分類することが出来ます。
『葛藤のあるタイプ』とは、『他者と親密な関係を持ちたい欲求』と『他者に傷つけられるかもしれないという不安』の激しい葛藤がある回避性人格障害であり、かつて『受動的‐攻撃性障害』と呼ばれた人格障害とオーバーラップする特徴を持ちます。葛藤心理を反映して境界性人格障害(ボーダーライン・パーソナリティ)に見られる『両価性(アンビバレンツ)の対人関係』の特徴を示すことが多くあります。即ち、友人・恋人・知人などに対して『理想化(賞賛)とこきおろし(罵倒)』の両極端な対人評価をしてしまうことがあり、自分の愛情欲求を満たさない他人との人間関係が非常に不安定なものとなります。葛藤のある回避性人格障害の人は『自分の自立性(自尊心)・他人の優しさ』を重視しており、それらが満たされていれば人間関係は安定しますが、それらが脅かされていると感じると『相手に対する攻撃・侮辱・軽視』などの問題行動が発生してきます。自分を批判(否定)したり傷つけたりする危険のある相手からは遠ざかり『対人的なひきこもり』の防衛行動を選択しますが、自分の受けた失望・悲哀・不満を相手に対して間接的な攻撃(嫌がらせ)としてぶつけることもあり、回避性人格障害の中では能動的な攻撃性が強いタイプだと言えます。対人的なストレスや被害感に対する『過敏性』が見られ、人間関係の中で小さな批判や反論を受けると感情が不安定になって対人関係を回避する傾向が見られます。『相手に対する敵意・不満・攻撃性』を抑圧しているタイプであり、何らかのストレスがきっかけになってその敵意が相手に向けられることがあり、対人ストレスに対しては『ひきこもり(社会的抑制)・間接的な攻撃(相手の妨害)』という反応を返します。

分裂病人格障害SPD)の人は、他人と親しい人間関係を持ちたいというモチベーションが殆どなく、意識の覚醒水準が低いために感情機能が著しく鈍磨していて、他人の肯定的・否定的なコミュニケーションに迅速に対応することができないのです。SPD回避性人格障害(APD)も社会活動(社会参加)の抑制による『社会的孤立』の状況に陥りやすいのですが、SPDが他人の反応に対して『鈍感』であるのに対して、APDは他人の感情的反応や言動に対して『過敏(敏感)』であるという違いがあります。APDの人は、意識の覚醒水準が高く他人と親しい人間関係を持ちたいというモチベーションも高いのですが、『他者の心理・行動に対する過敏性』によって自分が批判されたり恥辱を受けるのではないかという不安が極端に高くなっています。APDの他人の言動に対する過敏性は『自我防衛機制の過剰発動』を引き起こし、必要以上に他人と距離を取ってしまいます。最終的には他人が自分を否定しようとしているという『自意識の過剰』に陥ってしまい、対人欲求(親和欲求)を満たすことが難しくなってしまうのです。
